today was full of rainy adventures! this morning, i snoozed until the very last minute, when i went over for breakfast. i was almost really upset that i actually went, when i saw the giant plate of beans and goat cheese on my plate. blehhh. none of the girls were too happy about it either, i'll tell ya that much. after breakfast, sarah and i were very bad interns, and we slept until almost 8 o'clock. i can guarantee that the extra sleep was worth the 20 minutes that we missed sitting in the office before school started too. i started my day off with a very productive tutoring session with Wendy. she has completely grasped all of her numbers, adding and subtracting single digits, all of her letters and their blends, and is beginning to write words. I.AM.SO.PROUD. i wish i could credit this to my teaching skills, but i really just think that she's super smart! after tutoring, i went straight to work with Aldi and Isabel in the 2nd grade math class! They are preparing for their math test tomorrow, and are at the most drastically different levels of preparedness. Aldi can almost do everything on the test, and Isabel has to be reminded that she is multiplying. This school is desperately in need of a Special Education program, I just don't know where they'd find the teachers who are certified, or the money to pay them what they'll deserve.
after math class, all of us four interns escaped to the snack room for saltines and peanut butter. YUM. the girls were standing outside the door chanting "galletas con crema mante porfaaaaa." they wanted us to share our delacacies so badly! NOPE!
after break, we went back to work. i worked a little in the library, and then took Candy for her afternoon tutoring session. she is struggling so much. i just wish that i could get her to focus long enough to really learn something!
around 12, Tiffany (our chinese friend) arrived at the Oasis to take us out to lunch! we were SO excited about our outing! we didn't go far, only to a restaurant right in town in San Lucas. this time-no walking required. aka, our food tasted even BETTER! we were somewhat skeptical of the place she took us. it was on a side street, with a little wooden sign, and two big heavy wooden doors that led into it from a concrete alcove. once we got in, the place looked abandoned, but we sat down and gazed at the menu for a bit! all of the dishes on the menu were very "typical" guatemalan dishes, so we were excited to try something new! (as if all the food we eat at the oasis isn't typical enough!!) i decided on Pollo Asado, which is roasted chicken. it came with rice, beans and chips, potato salad, and a roasted potato. i was in heaven! ohh it was so yummy! i think all the other girls chose some sort of soup and all devoured theirs too! after lunch, tiffany took us by a tienda so we could get sodas and snacks to bring back to the Oasis! I got 3 cokes, 2 cupcakes, and 2 packs of gum for 25Q aka...$3.50ish. SUCH a deal. man, i need this economy cause america is bumpin everything up wayyy too much!
once we got back to the Oasis, we decided to spend the rest of the afternoon just chatting with the other girls in the office, and making some bracelets for the girls in our houses.
at 3, we laced up our sneaks and headed for the soccer field. ooomph. the LAST thing i wanted to do today! of course, it was gringas vs chicas again, but this week we only lost 4-3! we were SO proud of our work! i played defense, and got 3 really good boots out of the backfield! go me!
at around 6, i went over to the house and played games with the girls until supper. Belen and I played tic tac toe, which here, is called, to ti to. i tried to use some strategies that i've learned in my many years as a TTT player, but i quickly got outsmarted and then lost just about every round. soon, supper was ready. we had...see if you can guess....
scrambled eggs and beans. tortillas of course. after dinner, lupita and i decided we were going to read a fairytale book together. hmph. much harder than i expected. fairytales do not use everyday language, therefore, we had the spanish-english dictionary out a lot a lot. while i was trying to figure out words in spanish, she was doing the same in english! we got through about 2 pages before my brain hurt, so we're saving the rest for the rest of this week! excited!
after i left the house and said buenas noches, i went over to the snack room to read a little and have a snack. (yes, still hungry from the eggs and beans). i poured myself a heaping bowl of cereal, and went to the fridge to find a DROPLET of milk left. i wasn't going to waste the cereal, so i ate it. ohh it was awful..bleh.
ps...i can smell my shoes right now. ugh. they smell like tennis season-someone PLEASE remind me to wash them once i get home. yuckk.
while i was reading, i found this Psalm.
Psalm 97:1-
"The Lord reigns, let the earth be glad; let the distant shores rejoice!"
i think that i liked this so very much because of all the distant "shores" everyone are at right now. mom=germany. betsy=central america. allie=australia (she can come back anytime. america will welcome her.) everyone else=u.s.a.
it makes my heart so glad to watch people from every nation and tongue rejoice over our father! He is so great and mighty, and He reigns over all things! I love how he consistantly takes care of us. Loves us unconditionally. Provides things for us to experience just so that we'll know the depth and truth of His grace and love. Gives us chances to make him KNOWN. i want to encourage everyone to just really step back and realize that WHEREVER you are, whether at home, far away, on a boat, in a treehouse, couch potato-ing, anywhere-that you can rejoice over him! Let the nations REJOICE!
so much looove, de mi costa a tuyos!
