sun.burn.

let me tell you about my day today.

it started with, waking up at the oasis. 12 flea bites in one nights sleep. i'd say that's pretty acceptable considering how many i had this summer. i ate a little banana for breakfast (first thing i'd eaten in almost 2 days. i think i drank the water or something. bad.stomach.news.) after the banana, i finished up the translating work from monday, video chatted with Rolando (who, now, ALL of the girls think is soooooo guapo.)
after those things, i got assigned to painting rocks. how do you feel about that, huh? well, there were 50 little miniature sized bricks all lined up for me to paint. i first began with the primer coat. that completely covered the bricks and 83% of my hands as well. after painting all 6 sides of the brick with the primer, i had to sit there and let them dry. i made myself comfortable in the grass for about 10 minutes. next, i got my white paint all stirred up, and began carefully painting each side of the brick. between each side, i allowed about 4 minutes of drying time. if they we're tacky, woe is them, i was NOT being slow at this job. so, as each side was painted, and all lumps were evened out, those were just about the prettiest bricks i'd ever seen! (if i do say so myself)

so i go inside to take a little break from the outdoors, and Corbey hands me a piece of paper with 3 words written on it, and 3 little baby paintbrushes. my follow-up job? painting those three words on each brick to be used for the devotion tonight. not using a handy-dandy paint pen, OHHH NOOOO, curses to the paint-pen, but using a little-itty-bitty-i can barely see the tip of this thing-newborntoddler-brush. so, i went on my "merry" little way, and started to paint. paintpaintpaintpaint. all a f t e r n o o n. (notbitter)
by about 4:30 though i was starting to sting a little around my neck, and my whole body was stiff. good thing i only had 14 more to do. aaaaand DONE. i finished, had Rodriguez help me carry the little joy-bricks into the Bodega, and i rinsed out my paintbrush.
so, back to the stinging neck. i had one of the chicas check it out. I'M SORRY. My neck could cook eggs on it it's radiating that much heat from sunburn. HEYYY close to the equator, WHAT'S UP! They rest of my body is plesantly pink and toasty, yet the neck. ohhhh the neck. let's just say, i took a shower, am wearing a baby tank top so that it's not touching it, my hair is in a high bun, and i've put about 6 rounds of lotion on it. we'll see how it goes tomorrow with a REAL shirt.

as i was painting brick after brick today, i began substituing some words in my favorite songs:

"And Brick by Brick you'll lead me, and I will follow you all of my days."

i'm so grateful for the Lord's guidance in my life. wow. like, imagine what a complete wreck i'd be if HIS hands weren't painting bricks or braiding chica's hair, if HIS words weren't speaking the spanish language day-by-day, if HIS feet weren't walking along the streets.

brush-less

let me just shoot ya a little note each day while i'm down here!

this morning, i got up and showered, ready to hit the oasis for the day! guess who discovered they forgot their hairbrush. THIS GIRL. guess who's hair doesn't do well without a hairbrush? THIS GIRL AGAIN. i haven't exactly figured out the solution to this problem, but i assume there will be one by the time i wake up and get a shower tomorrow.

today at the oasis felt just like my summer days! i translated, helped out with a little afterschool tutoring, and played outside. i've learned a new trampoline game. WATCH OUT AMERICA-I'm bringin it back! "Los Muertos" is the name- Here's the jingle: "Los Muertos, Los Muertos, Levantante! Levantante!" (Dead, Dead, Wake up! Wake up!--There's your translation Mrs Pam!) This game is simple. One person lays in the middle of the tramp while the others are jumping and singing the song. When we get to the last "wake up" the person gets up, eyes closed, and tries to tag someone. The first person tagged is now the "dead". Kind of morbid, but at least it's fun!

I know you're expecting a food update-Lunch today: chicken & vegetable soup, tortillas, a mango, and some kinda sweet juice. WOW. sooo good to be back! Loved it!

We got home around 7:30 from the Oasis, and everyone is exhausted, and full from supper. Janie cooked steak, tortillas, homemade guacamole, sour cream, bean dips, and salsa, and after ravaging through the supper buffet line, our plates were clean and we were stuffed. Dee-lish-us.

After supper, I got the opportunity to talk with Janie about my most recent job venture. I'm on day two in this country, I love it. I love it more than most things that I've ever loved before. The people, the language, the culture. Todos me encantan. However, God has given me great peace. I have experienced nothing but joy being here, but I know, that the timing isn't perfect, it's not HIS. My heart has finally found contentedness with my head, and what the Lord has told me. I know, as I am obedient, he will fulfill all of my desires, and tenfold. As I watch, and grow, as the Lord has waiting for me, I will be blessed beyond my wildest imagination.
Continually, pray for me. Pray that my heart stays content, that the Lord blesses the people of this place, and in turn blesses my heart to have a burning passion for this place, so that I can one day give so much love to each and every one of the people I come in contact with.

day 3 tomorrow! i'm having a sleepover at the oasis, so, we'll see if i get internet enough to post anything!

I'mmmm BACK!

Blog Friends!
I'm back! It seems that I don't find myself happy and excited to blog from anywhere but Guatemala! I'm telling you, I LOVE this place. With every single bone in my body. WOW.
Today, I found myself on the plane at 9am, after NOT enough sleep last night. Carlie and Corbey picked me up from the airport around 11:30am (1:30pm East Coasters, 7:30pm Europeans, and 1:30am Aussies)-we came back to their place, and then Carlie and I went into Antigua. What a rush! I felt so complete just driving around on the little cobblestone streets with everything in my midst being written or spoken in Spanish. We went to lunch at Sky Cafe-the view is breathtaking! I'll post pictures when i get back to the States (forgot that cord.whoops). We ordered the Grande Nachos. When they say grande, they mean it. It was ENORMOUS. Wowzah! However, the two of us just gulped it down and enjoyed each and every second! Then, we waltzed our way over to the market where I picked up some bracelets and bartered with two different, equally desperately charming men for a hammock. Ended up getting one for Q240. Meaning... $30. Handmade, beeeautiful colors. I'm bringin it home. First one to gimme the money gets it.

Then, OASIS TIME! It was so so much fun to see those chicas again! I just LOVE them! They all remembered me, and then there were the token few that are new and hadn't met me yet, so that was fun! Of course we jumped on the trampoline, and then took homemade sleds from cardboard boxes down the hills by the soccer fields, just chatted, and caught up. Oh, how I've missed them so! My spanish, not quite failing me, but not really saving my life yet either. I think I'm still timid. it's okay-it'll get better SOON!

As many of you know, I've been offered a job at home (MB) for the 2011-2012 school year. This job acceptance is a challenge of my trust and obedience to the Lord in a MAJOR way. Selfishly, I would come straight back down here in a milli-second and stay forever, however, the Lord is soverign and HE will have His timing and way with my life. The Lord has provided this job as a means of a lot of provisions and ways to equip me before He sends me off!
I would appreciate each and every one of your prayers while I'm down here, as I know that this is going to be the largest testing of my strength and obedience and faith.

Por ahora, adios!

ingrid.

such simple joys in life.

tonight was so special. my roommates and i spent the whole evening together in downtown greenville, and then snuggled up in blankets on our porch swings under twinkling lights and the stars.
THIS is what college is about. THIS is what CLEMSON is about.
as i'm a senior, and looking back on my last four years here, i realize that college is nothing but community. the community and the friends that you make will, without a doubt, change your life, and your heart forever. the simple, little things that you experience with your best friends absolutely make your time here.

here are a few things that made me smile so big just in the last two days:

*carolyn came in town. we strutted all dressed up artsy downtown and ate ridiculously expensive burgers. just because.
*i drove in the car with my precious friend and sang really dirty rap music without a guilty conscious because we were laughing too hard through all the lyrics to really even understand what we were saying.
*i spent the ENTIRE day with hannah and michael, playing tennis. pulled out my competitive streak and DOMINATED a little doubles with my doubles partner of 7 years now.
*my roommates and i, got all dressed up F A N C Y and went to downtown greenville. we went to a restaurant called Chicora Alley.
IIIIII'M SORRY! it might be my new f a v o r i t e place. here's my menu from supper: chicken taco with guacamole, sour cream, pico de gallo, and cheese. lil appetizer of a 6 layer dip: beans, sour cream, guacamole, cheese, black beans.
*A DESSERT OF FRIED PLANTAINS. :) :) :) :) :)
*sitting on my porch, drinkin tea in our never ending intersection of an apartment.

bestest

ya know, there are things in life that just flat out make you happy. they are things that bring joy to your day no matter what. a few days ago, i was having a no good terrible horrible very bad day. i was stressed out about school, frustrated with friendships, and tired. in my favorite movie, "The Sound of Music", Maria teaches the children to sing about their favorite things and they will feel better. so, after this no good terrible, horrible, very bad day i decided to sit on the floor of my bedroom with a piece of paper, and write about MY favorite things, the BEST things:

1. Ice Cream-any flavor really.
2. Asian Food- Chinese, or Japanese. aka COMFORT FOOD.
3. The Sound of Music-singing all the songs at the very top of my lungs.
4. A gorgeous sunset.
5. Someone playing with my hair.
6. The day that the sun comes out and the breeze is actually warm.
7. When I can walk around without any shoes on, all day long.
8. When a child gets joy out of learning something new.
9. The smile you can put on someones face when they get an unexpected present.
10. Throwing a football.
11. The sting of a sunburn.
12. Hair fresh out of the ocean.
13. Freshly painted fingernails.
14. Fingernail polish in just about every color you could imagine.
15. Ranch Dressing
16. Watching the Sunrise from the beach.
17. Sand on the floorboards of my car.
18. A warm fuzzy blanket.
19. A crackling fire.
20. A grilled cheese dipped in hot tomato soup.
21. A good, tight, hug.
22. A good morning text or phonecall.
23. Windows down car ride.
24. A nap on the couch after a long day in the sun.
25. A surprise note.
26. Homemade potato soup.
27. Muscles being sore.
28. Tall glass of Sweet Tea

for now...

Valentine's Day!

My definition of Valentine's Day for the past several years = a holiday to celebrate your significant other.

Ask me how many Valentine's Days out of the 21 Valentine's Days that I've been alive, I've celebrated with a significant other. Go ahead. The answer you're gonna get is ZERO. Even out of the THREE years I was on-and-off with a boy, we always seemed to be off during February...specifically February 14th. Skeptical...

This year, I found myself in an odd state when I woke up. I didn't really have the "yuuuckkkgghhh" feeling, like "faaaantastic, i'm single" I woke up, excited to see my Kindergarteners, and see their faces light up when they get their sweet Valentine's from their classmates. My whole day was spent loving on little babes, who probably don't get loved on at home. Making sweet pink and red bracelets, decorating cookies, and playing in the sun at recess. When I got home, Susannah and I went to the grocery store for the afternoon, and took our time picking out delicious lunchbox snacks, and healthier dinner menus. I came home to a full house of 5 of my 6 roommates (Laur was out with her hottie hottie boyfriend). We all cooked a variety of foods for our suppers.

Sidenote: 3 of my roommates are participating in a Detox Program-they're giving up 80% of their usual diet, and replacing it with healthier options, and cutting out most things that are "bad for them"--Needless to say, I'm not quite participating...

I baked chicken, steamed broccoli, waterchestnuts, and carrots, and made a little salad. I'm not kidding, one of the more delicious things I've eaten in SO long! Ash made Spaghetti Squash with marinara sauce (tried it-real.real.good)

All 5 of us, proceeded to do a workout program for the Wii. Just Dance. I have never been so ryhtmically humbled in my LIFE.
As we speak, we're all sprawled out in the living room, painting our nails, and watching the ever so popular yet ridiculous Bachelor.

I've never been so THANKFUL for Valentine's Day. This year, I've learned something that I think is so important for every single person to ever learn-

Valentines Day = spend the time doing what you love, with the people that you love.

First and foremost, show EVERYONE you love, how much you love them, and why you love them.
Secondly, don't ever sacrifice doing something you love on this special day. You should feel absolutely treasured.

"The King is ENTHRALLED by your BEAUTY" Psalm 45:11
The LORD is constantly obsessed with you, He desires for your love, and you should be overwhelmed by how much He loves you. His love is the only love that should overtake your heart, body, soul and mind. Whether you're in love with another person, and spending tonight with them, eating dinner, watching the sunset, checkin' out the stars, be CONFIDENT in the knowledge that you cannot and will not ever be loved more than how HE loves you.

Happy V-Day! Eat some cherry-filled-chocolate!

"Hi! My name is Betsy and I'm calling from Clemson." click.

So, honestly, I forgot that I had a blog until about ten minutes ago. Not really sure what reminded me, because I'm:
1. Laying in my bed singing Kindergarten Calendar songs.
2. Watching the Kardashians
3. Eating a bacon egg and cheese biscuit

Therefore. No reminders. BUT here's the newest piece of excitement in my life!
I GOT A JOB. No, not a permanent, pay-me-big-bucks, i get a lunch hour job, but a little part time job.
I, Betsy Baker, am Clemson's newest Phone-a-thon caller! I have my own little computer, with my own little blue folder, and my own white phone. I decided to work two days a week, Sundays and Wednesdays from 6-9.

Here is a sample of the scenarios I work with for three hours:
Scenario 1-They don't answer and I have to leave a message
"Hi Mr/Mrs. _______ I'm Betsy, and I'm calling from Clemson on behalf of the Clemson Fund, so sorry I missed you tonight, I'll try to call back another day. Hope you're having a great night and GO TIGERS!

Scenario 2- They answer and aren't interested
"Hi! I'm Betsy from CU calling from the CF (Clemson Fund). How are you this evening?" (Then, just bond...blah blah, talk about anything you could possibly think of that would appeal to these people) "Would you like to donate to Clemson?" CLICK.

Scenario 3- They answer and are interested
"Hi! I'm Betsy from CU calling from the CF. How are you this evening?" (bond bond bond) "Would you like to donate to Clemson?"
"Yes, please mail me a pledge card"
"Alright, thank you! GO TIGERS!"

Here are the rules I have for this:
NEVER FORGET TO END A CONVERSATION WITH GO TIGERS!!!
ALWAYS SOUND AS SWEET AND SOUTHERN AS POSSIBLE.

Tonight was my first night working, and out of the maybe...100 calls I made, I got 6 pledges!!! WOO!

So, if you're ever interested in learning how to make fundraising calls...I'm your girl. Call me. :)

The First Week

This week was my first week of Student Teaching at Wren Elementary-I'll post pictures of my classroom soon! I am paired with a teacher who has been teaching for 24 years, and I am PUMPED to learn so much from her. She's got this Kindergarten thing goin' on. We have 21 students, who are so stinkin' precious! For the past 4 days, I've been observing, and quickly taking over some non-instructional classroom tasks. I have two very challenging little boys, M and S. Yesterday, I was watching M do his guided reading. He has been struggling SO badly with learning. At 5 years old, it's not super easy to read, and he was faced with a book called "I Can Do It!" As he began to read, he was not confident in his skills, but as he was reminded how to look at the illustrations for clues, he was able to figure out the words rather quickly! Upon completion of the book (twice), Mrs. Fortner said, "Well M! You're just fabulous!" His response, "YUP!!" And then, he proceeded to come to me, and the assistant teacher and read us the books with a giant grin on his face! He asked if he could bring the book home and read it to his mom! It's UNBELIEVABLE how much confidence a child can gain from just one book!

Let me explain S to all of you. He is a child who is a mix of Black and Hispanic. He is about 2 feet tall, and a little rocket. He can't sit still to save his life, and he doesn't know when it's okay to tell stories. All day today, S was BEGGING Mrs. Fortner to play is DVD. We weren't exactly sure what this was going to be, because the handwritten title on the disc was "Our babies. Our blessings" I mean, what would YOU think?
So, we put the disc into the computer, and began scanning it for potential inappropriateness. Turns out it was clean. So, projected to the SmartBoard it went! 25 minutes of non-stop S family fun! Pictures of their family holidays, vacations, daily lives, and tattoos all displayed for our class to see. Of course, this show had theme music. The Circle of Life was the first track, followed by True Colors, and some other soul/r&b/jazzy tunes. Definitely the HIGHLIGHT and the bearer of laughter for not only our teachers, but the teachers next door!

I begin my actual teaching on Monday-today I wrote the Morning Message and I'll present it along with a musical performance of "The Green Grass Grows All Around" and "The Chicken Dance".
Wish me luck!

Dandraya Zavakrup :)

Last night, I had the privilege to spend the evening celebrating the engagement of my best friend Andraya to my sweet friend Daniel! These two have been dating for almost a year-and-a-half now, and we were just WAITING for this exciting day!
Daniel is a tricky little fella, keeping Andraya busy with a Beauty Day (I'm sure she was reluctant...puh) and planning a snowboarding trip with his boys to throw her off. The proposal plan began with a scavenger hunt for Andraya, and ended in the place he fell in love with her!
I am so proud of the way I have seen them grow in a relationship, and in their relationships with the Lord together!
As they embark on this new part of their relationship, I will pray that their hearts, their words, their minds, and their thoughts will be webbed with the Lord, and they will strive to worship, and glorify HIM in all of their decisions.

I am SO grateful that I have these two people in my life, and I am more than excited to stand next to Andraya as she gives her heart, and the Zavakos name, away to Daniel!

And walk in love, [esteeming and delighting in one another]
as Christ loved us and gave Himself up for us,
a slain offering and sacrifice to God [for you, so that it became] a sweet fragrance. Ephesians 5: 2
